My Novice Year | Jane Seu

As this season comes to an end, I have just concluded my novice year on the Nebraska rowing team. Since I first stumbled into a boat two semesters ago, I have had the opportunity to travel, compete and get to know an irreplaceable group of teammates. I have many more seasons to come but I will forever remember this first year as one of incredible growth and inspiration.

The heart of the novice is fragile. The challenges of the sport drive the individual to his/her weakest and most vulnerable moments. However, when that first moment of success is earned, the novice cannot ignore the conviction of reward. They have become part of the legacy of struggles and triumphs of rowers before them. In this process, the novice heart is not simply repaired, but reborn.

One year later, I cannot say that I now know everything about rowing, but I have come to know more about myself. I can say that sitting in a boat with an oar in my hands brings me peace. From the warm-up to the finish line, I find myself facing the most honest reflection of who I am as an individual, athlete, and teammate.

I thank Nebraska Crew for this unforgettable year and can't wait for us to reunite in the fall. I look forward to returning and competing as a varsity rower. I especially look forward to meeting new recruits and feel privileged to know that I will have the opportunity to join them on their own journey as a novice.

See you on the water,

Jane Seu
